The Verrazzano Centre for Historical Studies was founded in
2002 in memory of Cavalier Luigi Cappellini, owner of the Castle
of Verrazzano, who dedicated a great part of his time to the
research and valorisation of the life of the navigator Giovanni da
Verrazzano. For this activity he was nominated Honorary Citizen of
Greve in Chianti. The Centre for Historical Studies is based in the
Castle where it preserves the family archives with a collection of
antique documents and a collection of modern literature all
pertaining to Giovanni da Verrazzano. The Centre organises periodic
commemorations and scientific events and actively participates in
public and private enterprises related to the navigator. The
Director of the Centre is the present owner of the Castle, Luigi
Giovanni Cappellini, son of Cavalier Cappellini.

The Verrazzano Castle
The Castle of Verrazzano, situated on a hilltop 20 kilometres from Florence, dominates the magnificent panorama. The Castle was built on a site first settled by the Romans, possibly even the Etruscans and then by the Longobards. The central tower built in the late Romanic period was joined by an underground tunnel to another tower close by.
